Pre-Op Program for Total Hip and
Total Knee Replacements
Pre-operative joint replacement visits are available to those who are scheduled for knee or hip replacement surgery. A VNA Physical Therapist will visit the home to identify issues and assess needs during the post-op recovery period in the home. Recommendations and information regarding equipment, home modifications and safe mobility are discussed.
- Educate the patient on surgical procedure and the recovery period
- Perform a home assessment and recommend modifications that may ease the transition for returning to the home following hospitalization
- Evaluate the need for equipment that needs to be ordered prior to going to the hospital, and provide a list of equipment and other recommended items which should be given to the patient when discharged from the hospital, in order to facilitate the discharge process
- Initiate protocol exercises with the patient to improve knowledge of post-op recommendations
- Educate the patient/family in post-op precautions – particularly after a hip replacement
- Teach the patient proper use of assistive device(s) for ambulation, as indicated
- An opportunity for the patient to meet with the therapist with whom they will be working when they return home.
